Rats have a very bad reputation, since scientists found out, that those parasites (which some of those races are) were responsible for some very dangerous pandemics, e.g. pestilence. And they destroyed some stocks, when the agriculture wasn't as high-tech as nowadays.

Actually, the blame was even farther from the rats for the pestilence. They were infected with fleas that were infected. The rats themselves, as far as I know, were also sick.
They still destroy stock, rats are intelligent and careful about what they eat. Apparently they can make a connection between a sore stomach and strange (poisoned) food they ate, usually they go back to where they found the 'food' and pee or poop on it to mark it as dangerous for other rats. It's hard to catch rats in traps too. What I am wondering now is what would happen if there was a large group of caged rats near or in a storehouse. Would it scare away other rats? Do you suppose rats' scent would keep away rats?
