TextEdit does not do text

Apr 30, 2008 13:23

I try to keep my nerdy software gripes to a minimum, but every so often my jaw hits the floor with such force that venting becomes mandatory. (unpre-vent-able... ha ha!)

Get this: TextEdit does not offer the option to save a document as Plain Text (.txt). I'm staring here at the Save As dialog in flabbergasted confusion.

tech, retarded, mac

You have to switch the format to plain text (from the Format menu) first. This was a relatively recent (X.5 I think, maybe X.4) change, and definitely not a good one. It actually made me switch from TextEdit to Textwrangler, because at a stroke TextEdit lost its convenience advantage.

And when you switch the format to plain text, the save as dialog gives you a list of options that will confuse the heck out of the average user (several types of unicode, "western", and far-east encodings.

This is indeed one jaw-droppingly bad piece of work by Apple.
