Whoops, I never finished writing about TCAF. And this'll be my first (so probably only) post for the month of June, too... good thing I didn't let the month slip away entirely ( Read more... )

Reading on the beach sounds fun. I'm too distracted to be able to do that. I'm forever people watching or doing something else while at a beach!!

Re "Hirunaka no Ryuusei", I really like Mamura and the uncle. I like the friendship and the family relationship in the series. And MC isn't afraid to eat (and drool!) :P I could be wrong but I suppose smoking in Japan isn't looked down as it is in the US and it may seem to be a sign of being an adult. That said, I'd rather not to have those cigarettes in my books.

"sense a pattern here for lys' personal moe-points"
:D

As rec for junior high, "Voice Over" is cute.
Have a good week and fun with the new series and thanks for the summary :)
eta: Regarding "Yajuu Kanojo" I'm glad that you enjoy it :)

Haha, we have had your same struggles with manga, as I'm sure you know or suspect. That's part of why we make it a point never to play Kingdom Hearts on Sunday, even though we don't think it's a Sabbath-inappropriate series; we want to make sure we're not single-mindedly obsessing 24-7, too. As for boundaries, for us personally, we think manga is pretty much the same as any other kind of entertainment that people can get wrapped up in (and in fact, even stuff like Negima seems to be generally less...inappropriate, for lack of a better word...than a lot of the popular American TV shows, if you ask us), so I think the same standards apply to manga that they do to anything else.

Anyway, this probably sounds really cheesy, but good work striving to choose the right and set a good example! And good luck!

As an atheist, perhaps my input on the "spending too much time with manga" concern is unwelcome. If not, I would point out that for me, one of the most concerning/off-putting(/terrifying) things about Christians is the apparent assumption that Christianity is the only religion, which leads to things like trying to create laws based on a Biblical worldview. Now I'm personally not that excited about anime/manga, but I *love* having Japan as an example of a first world country where everything is really really nice but most people are not Christian. I think it would do everyone a lot of good to remember that the world is full of peaceful, happy people who are Hindus, Buddhists, Shintos, Muslims, or atheists (or hundreds of other things). So, I would say a healthy interest in Japanese culture (all else being equal) probably makes you a worldlier, more understanding Christian. Even (hypothetically) if you thought non-Christians were horrible sinners, Jesus was all about hanging out with sinners and getting to know them so we can be more ( ... )

I agree with you that Christians have a habit of assuming their way of thinking is the only correct one, but only because I think all humans have that habit. Culture shock is a thing regardless of one's faith, after all. Sometimes when we come across something new and strange, we have to take a step back and figure out why it seems so strange to us, and whether or not that's a bad thing. I would say usually it's not bad, but I still understand people thinking, "Wait! That's not how I thought the world was supposed to be!" and finding something to be off-putting.

But we think the concern was not whether or not it's "right" to love anime and manga, but a question of how much time is spent in the pursuit of it, as opposed to other, perhaps more worthwhile/productive endeavors. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, lyschan.) And it looks to us like lys has found a balance that works for her and her values.
