Today I saw my first mountaintop removal mining site up-close and in person. I was in Kayford Mountain, WV for the Mountainkeepers Festival. Kayford is 50 acres owned by Larry Gibson, whose family has lived on the mountain for 200 years. All the surrounding mountains have been blown up for coal, but Larry refuses to sell. He really is very impressive. He's kept his sense of humor despite all the crap that's happened. It's a very divisive issue up there.

Aww, that's so sad. I just got back from vacation to the mountains to whitewater raft and it makes me sad to imagine a mountain not being there anymore.

Gosh, I work for a one of the smaller power companies in Georgia and is glad they haven't done anything horrible to anyone except cut trees near transmission lines. This is only because it could fall down and start a fire.

Also I hope you don't mind me adding you as a friend. I'm also narfzz on SF.

That's really an awesome website. I had a pretty good idea which mountain the coal came from. It's so sad to actually pinpoint it now.
