what I did today

Today I saw my first mountaintop removal mining site up-close and in person. I was in Kayford Mountain, WV for the Mountainkeepers Festival. Kayford is 50 acres owned by Larry Gibson, whose family has lived on the mountain for 200 years. All the surrounding mountains have been blown up for coal, but Larry refuses to sell. Because of that, he's gotten death threats, been run off the road, his dog has been shot and his cabin set on fire.

Guess what used to be here. Mountains!

This used to be the lowest point in the area. Sigh. But coal is America's energy future! And it's like, clean and stuff! Commercials told me so!
