Hey lyndal, hope your holidays were good. I haven’t studied Romeo and Juliet but I’m thinking maybe studying it might have taken some of the romance out of the story. Studying stuff generally isn’t very romantic especially not in school anyway. I don’t know if I’ve ever even read the play, I think I may have seen it performed when I was younger some time. But I have seen two films: Franco Zefferelli’s production of it in 1968 (http://students.ed.uiuc.edu/bach/rnj24/rj1968.html) and then the great modern adaption by Baz Luhrmann in the 90’s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romeo_%2B_Juliet). Did you see it? I saw it at the Cinema and it was great with a great soundtrack that I had to bye as well. It showed that Shakespeare’s writing is just so full of life and relevance even now.

hey Jesse, yeah I think I saw both version but I really enjoyed Baz Luhrmann's modern depiction. It is so relevant in today's society and I think that is what my teacher failed to stress. have you seen the bbc's "Shakespeare retold"? i think that show's relence to today as well. :)

I dont know Jesse, I mean, I watched Luhrmann's adaptation too, at school though (I was too young when it was released into the cinema... M15+ rating!), and it was almost parodying in its portrayal of Shakespeare's R&J, judging by the way the language is used, and for example how the guns have "S.W.O.R.D" written on their side. Kind of humorous dont you think?

I didn't get to see it at school either :(. But I loved the "S.W.O.R.D" on the gun! I thought it was a really nice touch. and I have to disagree that it was a parody, rather, i thought it encapsulated all the drama and political struggle as the play did. Sure while I was at school we focussed on the romance and like Jesse said it kinda takes some of that away by having your english teacher read it to you, but I later realised the more exciting part of the story, the politics between the two households, some thing that is even more relevant today.
