Regarding Control

Mar 06, 2006 20:27

Is it the nature of every human being to control others who seem or are going to be more powerful than he or she will ever be?
I, for one, believe that it is in our nature. Or rather in our weakened and ignorant natures. Ignorance is the root of fear. Therefore, the many ignorant fear something you cannot understand and thus backlash against it with ( Read more... )

don't give up
the more of your kind that give up
the less are to take their place once they've become the leading generation
your children will benefit from your open-mindedness
and their children shall benefit from theirs
remember that the world is experiencing a lot of new things
it experienced unprecedented change throughout the last century
and still needs time to adapt to the variety of new things which are growing in it
just watch
i have seen a number of intellectuals living their lives just as freely as any one else
i guess i'm just trying to say
don't give up
if you keep pushing
you'll get there

You have a way to imbue words with so much hope.

I have no plan on giving up, though I am still very pessimistic. I have a foreboding sense that, just as the pendulum swings, this society will backlash against all the progress from even the last fifty years, and we will return to zero again. It has happened once before to such a horrible extreme: From the eras of Athens, Cairo, and Rome into the Dark and Middle Ages of nothingness. The round world became flat again. Nerely everything was lost.

So, thank the gods for the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution. More people such as ourselves who fough against the grain.

i agree, there is the chance that the current spread of intellectualism could crumble, but i find that highly unlikely. high education is no longer just some western ideal. most of Asia and many regions in Africa have become centers to encourage and nurture brilliant minds. the value of knowledge has, in many cultures, already exceeded the value of wealth; and it's growth hardly seems near an end.
Many Americans are, on an individual level at the least, becoming interested in and aware of foreign affairs that don't involve them directly; something i can't recall as having happened before the late twentieth century. despite the perceived trend in sexual promiscuity there seems to be an overall growth in moral awareness and disapproval with any corrupt or self-centered actions from any government.
The more attention i pay to the people surrounding me the more morality and brilliance i see growing inside of them. I can't recall the last time i heard an argument in a class room in which students didn't examine a problem from every ( ... )

This is smartism. Discrimination against those who wish to learn from life rather than sit back and enjoy the ride with blindfolds tied securely over our faces. We are the nerds, the intellects, the weird and uncouth. We have a depth in our eyes and a large vocabulary, because we find pleasure in reading and writing as any other human might in sex. We are the new race to fear, and I am sad to see it.

This is such an old entry, but ♥.
