I think his instinct to wait a few days is a good one - it may just start to feel better on its own. But I wouldn't try to do much in the way of treating it yourself, except obviously resting it and taking pain meds. If it's swollen you could ice it to reduce the inflammation. You don't know whether it's sprained, strained, has a hairline fracture, is just badly bruised, or what, and trying to physically fix a problem when you don't know what the problem is can sometimes make it worse (Jake broke a finger when he was a kid, and his dad thought he could fix it himself to save on medical bills, and now Jake has a crooked finger).
We've been icing it and he's been resting it, so hopefully that helps. We just bought a sling at Fred Meyer so he can keep it still. I'm going to go to class with him tomorrow and carry his books (he stayed home today) 'cause I don't think lugging around his 10 lb calculus book will do him any favors. Thanks for the tip, you're right. I will not meddle.
Its probably just a sprain, given the mechanism of the injury. Take an ace wrap, go three times around the biceps, then start wrapping the chest, alternating going under and over the shoulder. When you go over the shoulder, pull down hard on the wrap.
