Longtime Boston Globe columnist Ellen Goodman has penned an essay about the "self-service economy." I think fondue is fun, as does sister_devora. In the Midwest, I've gone to places where you pick out your steak or chops & prepare them on their grill.

If she can't dunk a piece of raw food in a pot of delicious boiling broth and scoop it out when it's cooked to HER precise preferred taste, she's a truly lazy ass. :p

It's an ethnic dish, it's not a slippery slope that means next McDonalds will make you build your own burgers, it's a lot of fun, and the wait staff are very attentive about the drinks, broth refills, etc.
