See, that's the weird part. It was 'sold' to me as part of a routine physical, which for something relatively invasive like that doesn't sound right. And yet I was not the only person getting one--there were two in the room when I woke up from the whatever-they-knocked-me-out-with. And I needed an appointment which is highly weird here, because pretty much everything medically is a walk-in situation, and it took a bit of negotiating on my coteacher's part to get a Saturday appointment.
Now, whether that's part of a routine physical but only for people who complain of stomach troubles, that I don't know.
On that thought I remember the nurse's compliment. As I was (panicking and) yanking the tube out of my throat, she called me 'fighting'. Which is a compliment here, it means someone who strives for something and doesn't take anything lying down. I was touched.
