Just saw the movie! I liked it more than I expected, especially after reading some of the "official" reviews. I might even go see it again. It was suspenseful and well-made while also being disturbing and sad. It was so exciting to see Eric on a big screen! His character gave me the heebie jeebies from the moment he was giving his niece those creepy comments about how much she'd grown up.
Yay, I was waiting to hear your thoughts. It is disturbing and the ending is what's turning people off, or so I've read. I like those films where people repress memories and then act out on them years later and in ways that are not really normal, but they have to happen for the truth to finally be out.
But Eric was creepy! I still get chills when I think about it, but I really did like it. I'm planning on watching it tomorrow again.

Enjoy it again tomorrow! I'm gonna have to get my horror-fan friend to go with me the second time around and see what she thinks. :) I'm actually curious to see the Uruguayan original, too.
What is it about reviewers that they seem to mimic each other? I think the internet has encouraged a bunch to just cut and paste. The preponderance of them I've read dismiss Adam Trese and ESS as wooden or not up to the level of Sarah Olsen. I don't agree. I don't even understand this critique. I thought they were both so much better than any review I've read has said they were. These characters are certainly central to the film. If it weren't for them, there would be no plot.
Also, I think some have been thrown by the complexity of this film. This is not a standard horror film, and I don't think the marketing has conveyed that. Therefore, some people were expecting to see something else instead of a psychological drama.
I watched this movie differently than I would a normal movie. I don't like horror so I read about the story beforehand and then watched the film analytically. I thought the film was actually hindered by the long shots. I had read that the actors had to hold the lantern in a certain spot in order to light the scene and their faces correctly. This led to some weird positioning.
For example, when Sarah was going down the stairs to the basement, she held the light against the sloping ceiling instead of into the scary, dark basement. Also, ESS held the flashlight weirdly. It was more to keep it steady than for mobility. But it did give us a nice view of his beautiful fingers so I'm not complaining.
I think it also caused some stiffness in the acting. It was as if the actors were very concerned about their placement and couldn't focus as much on performance.
Hey, thanks for the link! It's interesting to read the process behind a film like this. It makes me regret that I never took a cinematography course in college.
I'm actually planning to go watch the film again this weekend; it's playing at the $1 theater. Hee.
