Just saw the movie! I liked it more than I expected, especially after reading some of the "official" reviews. I might even go see it again. It was suspenseful and well-made while also being disturbing and sad. It was so exciting to see Eric on a big screen! His character gave me the heebie jeebies from the moment he was giving his niece those creepy comments about how much she'd grown up.
Yay, I was waiting to hear your thoughts. It is disturbing and the ending is what's turning people off, or so I've read. I like those films where people repress memories and then act out on them years later and in ways that are not really normal, but they have to happen for the truth to finally be out.
But Eric was creepy! I still get chills when I think about it, but I really did like it. I'm planning on watching it tomorrow again.

Enjoy it again tomorrow! I'm gonna have to get my horror-fan friend to go with me the second time around and see what she thinks. :) I'm actually curious to see the Uruguayan original, too.
What is it about reviewers that they seem to mimic each other? I think the internet has encouraged a bunch to just cut and paste. The preponderance of them I've read dismiss Adam Trese and ESS as wooden or not up to the level of Sarah Olsen. I don't agree. I don't even understand this critique. I thought they were both so much better than any review I've read has said they were. These characters are certainly central to the film. If it weren't for them, there would be no plot.
Also, I think some have been thrown by the complexity of this film. This is not a standard horror film, and I don't think the marketing has conveyed that. Therefore, some people were expecting to see something else instead of a psychological drama.
JMO, but I think the awkwardness that the father and uncle show with her in their opening scenes may come off as "wooden" so the reviewers peg them from that moment on. If that was their only appearance in the movie, then they might be justified in calling them that.
I also agree that many are hoping for the standard horror/slasher fare (or at least haunted house), so when it doesn't pan out that way (and maybe they have to think), they might feel disappointed or even misled. I haven't read any official reviews written by females....I would be interested in hearing a different pov. (I get really tired of a majority of critics for tv and movies being male.)
(I get really tired of a majority of critics for tv and movies being male.) Word! And it saddens me that women are still so under-represented in the mainstream film industry in general as well. I was so pleased that this movie was co-directed by Laura Lau, you know, a woman! :D
After a second viewing, I've revised my opinion of the guys' "wooden" reviews. As I wrote in another response, I now think some of their dialogue is wooden, but the two actors are not at all. Also, I finally read a review by a woman for TIme magazine. She seemed to have a slightly better opinion of the movie (or at least she seemed to have watched it and thought about it instead of instantly rejecting it).
