Author's Note: Thanks to respiratorygirl on LRO for the prompt. If you're confused about anything in this story, be sure to re-read the epilogue to to Rescue Me, as this more or less picks up where it left off. Basically, Luke and Reid are married now, and have moved in with Katie to help out now that Brad has been killed. Unlike the other two stories in this series, this fic is completely AU. :D Summary is song lyrics from Help! by the Beatles.

Experimenting with POV and stepping out of my comfort zone. Let me know what you think. Also, anything medical from this point on is so made up, its ridiculous.

Reid opened the door to Luke’s room slowly, shuffling inside.

He could have been sleeping.

Reid made his way over to the bed, his eyes never leaving Luke. He was afraid if he looked away, Luke might suddenly disappear.

He sat down in the chair next to the bed, reaching out and taking one of Luke’s limp hands in his. He would never forget the way Luke had looked earlier, unresponsive, his lips blue - he’d looked nearly dead. Reid supposed that made sense, as he’d nearly died.

“What happened?” Reid whispered, the familiar beeping of the machine the only other sound in the room. “You were fine when I left. You were fine.”

He leaned back in the chair, rubbing a hand over his face as exhaustion set in.

He didn’t remember falling asleep.

*

It was ass crack of dawn when Casey got the call about Luke.

“Casey?” Allison’s voice was on the other end of the phone.

“’Lo?” He mumbled into the phone. “Ali?”

“Casey, you have to get to the hospital.” She said, as he tried to focus on her words. “It’s Luke.”

*

People began slipping into Luke’s room at an ungodly hour. Reid was startled out of a sound sleep by Katie’s hand on his back.

“Katie?” He blinked at her for a moment. “What time is it?”

“Early.” She handed him a coffee, and he took it, taking a sip to wash the horrible taste out of his mouth. “Any change?” Reid shook his head.

“None.” Reid sighed. “If only we knew how this happened.”

“We’ll figure it out, Reid, and he’ll wake up.”

“Let’s be realistic, Katie.” Reid sighed. “We don’t know no how long he was like that, or how much brain damage the reduced oxygen in his blood stream might have caused.”

“Reid, you can’t assume worst case scenarios.”

“I’m a doctor, Katie. It’s what I do.” They fell silent. “What time did he get home last night?”

“I don’t know. I was asleep.” She answered. “Late.”

“His car wasn’t in the driveway.” Reid suddenly remembered. “I remember thinking that was odd, but he was in bed, so I forgot about it.”

“Maybe someone brought him home?”

“But why?”

“He wasn’t…drinking, was he?”

“Not before I left.” Reid frowned. “He was in a good mood. I can’t see him slipping like that.”

The door to Luke’s room opened, and Casey’s head poked in.

“Casey.” Katie said.

“Hey, Aunt Katie.” Casey greeted her, stepping into the room. “Dr. O.”

Reid didn’t bother snapping that he hated that nick name (it wouldn’t matter if he had, as Casey still used it all the time), too tired to deal with the littlest Hughes.

“Oh, man.” Casey moaned, his eyes on Luke. “He was fine when I dropped him off.”

“You brought Luke home?” Reid turned his piercing eyes on Katie’s nephew.

“Yeah - he…he, well -“ Casey stammered.

“Spit it out, Hughes.”

“He seemed like he was drunk.”

“Fuck.” Reid muttered. Luke promised he wouldn’t…

“Did Bob run a toxicology report?” Katie asked.

“Yeah.” Reid sighed again. “Results are due back sometime today.”

“We won’t know anything for sure until we get those.” Katie tried to reassure him. “Maybe it’s something else.”

“Right now, Katie, I’m really just wishing he drank too much.” She rubbed her hand on his back.

“What time did you drop him off?” Katie asked Casey.

“Around 2-2:30, so pretty late.” Casey answered. “He seemed hammered, so I helped him inside, and put him to bed.” He paused, choking on his words. “I thought he just fell asleep.”
