The end of the Stargåte franchice

So I finished watching Stargåte Universe last week. I've now watched the whole Stargåte franchice, except for the last Stargate SG-1 movie and the cartoon Stargåte Infinity, which I'm not going to watch. I started this project in 2010, so I've been watching it for over two years now. There have been some gaps in the middle, but I still kinda empty now. That was like 18 seasons in total. I wish that they had made more than two seasons of Stargåte Universe. I was really enjoying it. It was one of the reasons that I started this whole project, as I had heard good things about the show and I hadn't seen it.

And the aliens are truly alien in Stargåte Universe and not some actors in costumes. The story starts with some people managing to finally figure out a way to travel half-way across the known universe and they land aboard this ship which is travelling across galaxies. But they can't get back home to Earth, so it's a race to survive life abord the ship while trying to figure out how to get back home. It's not a light and fluffy show. Things often go from bad to worse.

There were some really interesting multidimensional characters in Stargåte Universe, like Doctor Rush, who's the leading scientist onboard. He's a real bastard, but he's also brillaint and they couldn't make it without him. You can just never be sure of his motives for doing something. He shamelessly manipulates others and he's not above sacrificing other people, if it's called for in the pursuit of his mission. But he's so sneaky about it, that you can never really tell weather something was an honest accident or if things went exactly as Rush wanted them to. The characters in SU have their flaws and their shortcomings. The commander of the ship is cracking under the pressure of his task. Everybody's just so human. You can be sure that there's someone aboard who's more interested in saving their own ass when things get rough.

Stargåte Universe is pretty different Stargåte SG-1 and Stargåte Atlantis. The attmosphere and look of the show is pleaker. It's a shame that they didn't make more of it. I would've loved another season or two of it. There was also this one episode, which is was a perfect example of why I love scifi shows: the ship that they were on was on a course heading straigt for a star and there was nothing that the people onboard could do about it. They were getting ready to die when the ship flew into the star and started refueling straight from the star. They came out of the star no worse for wear. It was so awesome. And I remember thinking that why would anyone want to watch television shows about ordinary life, when you could be watching something like that. I get enough of ordinary life and drama in my own life. I want to watch something completely different for entertainment.

And now I have to figure out what I should start watching next. I've been thinking of rewatching X-Files, but I'm not opposed to something new, if it's just good, and preferably scifi.I was at the cottage last weekend with Nydi, Shibi and MM. We only stayed there for one night. There was sauna-ing and a fun boardgame. MM found a lot of chantarelli and I built a temporary cover for the sauna's chimney based on Orasi's idea. I didn't fall off the roof, so it was a huge success. Hopefully it will also stop water/snow from getting in. I think that ever since I renowated my room, I've had this fit-it attitude. If something needs fixing, I'll grap a saw and a hammer and do something about it. (Something to measure with is also pretty important. At the cottage I could only find a 30cm measuring stick, so I had to get creative with that and some string. But solving practical problems is part of the fun of the whole thing.)
