After the guys had gotten their own coffee, they all decided to head back to Santa Monica before lunch. Even though they would miss the traditional Sunday Surf Club excursion, that wouldn’t stop them from enjoying some time on the beach, intending to head to Hermosa Beach before heading home to Santa Monica.

“Would you stop sulking?”

“I still can’t believe you got me decaf.”

Amy rolled her eyes, standing out on the deck of the ferry, “maybe next time you’ll get your own.”

Alex scowled, “I hate you.”

Amy snorted, “Say that like you mean it and I might just believe you.” And when he said nothing, she smirked, running a hand through his hair. “You can also consider this payback for putting chili powder in my hot chocolate.”

“We were 17.”

“Yeah and? I told you I would get you back.”

Alex shrugged, leaning back against the railing, “we got your brother pretty good, as I recall.”

Amy nodded, almost mirroring his stance but leaning against the railing instead, “and just about everyone else that made the mistake of falling asleep early.”

“We’re still on for Hermosa Beach, right?”

“Duh.”

“Because I was thinking that when I win, you buy me a new surfboard in Oahu so we can hit North Shore.”

Amy stiffened slightly, “you want to go back to North Shore?”

Alex nodded, “yeah, why not?”

“Do you or do you not remember what happened last time we were at North Shore?” And without giving him a chance to reply, Amy huffed. “You almost drowned, Alex.”

“But I survived; clearly, I’m standing right next to you.” A beat passed, “and if anything happened to me, I’d have you. A certified and trained lifeguard.”

Amy sighed, “That’s not the point.”

Alex arched an eyebrow, “you aren’t seriously worried that something could happen to me, are you? Ames, that was seven years ago, I’ve improved by miles. It’s really not a big deal.”

Amy shook her head, “but you weren’t watching…. Ask A.J, I just… I hated feeling so helpless. Just standing there, not knowing if you were okay.”

He turned so he was leaning sideways, one hand reaching out to play with her hair. “But I’m fine. And you can’t tell me you don’t want to go back to North Shore.”

She shrugged, “I never said I wouldn’t want to go back.”

“So it’s settled, when I win we go back to North Shore and you buy me a new surfboard in Oahu.”

“But you won’t win.”

“All right, then what do we do if you win?”

Amy patted his cheek, “I’ll let you know when we get to Hermosa Beach.”

While Alex tried to get any sort of hints from Amy, Jamie, Josh, Christy and A.J appeared on deck; A.J and Christy proposing a game of beach volleyball for later. Even though the traditional teams were formed of two players each, they would play with three on each side. But, before Alex could turn it into another battle of the sexes bet, Josh and A.J elbowed him in the ribs.
