I am writing a short essay on a poem about whale fucking.

What is my life.

(To be fair, Whales Weep Not! by D. H. Lawrence is pretty classy for an entire piece devoted to large sea mammals doing the horizontal hokey pokey, so eh.)

It's a good poem with a lot of religious imagery/symbolism, but the entire time I was writing it I just kept thinking, "Really? Am I really writing about how awesome whale sex is?"

And with that out of the way; Lawrence, on whale fucking? Loathe though I am to admit it, I find my interest piqued. Is it seriously just... a poem on whales, and the consorts they choose or something?

Whales Weep Not! is just a totally classy poem about whales getting it on and how they love their babies and so on. There's a lot of religious imagery and I actually sort of like it, which is more than I can say about a lot of other poems that aren't about animals with the biggest dongs ever getting it on.
