So many roleplays are difficult, IMO, because there are these limits to what your character can do. And character development happens, so like months into the game you get people saying 'oh, you're OOC' and you find yourself thinking 'well, yeah, but I don't have a choice here. This situation called for development, and he can't just stay static all the time when he's meeting so many new people and whatnot'.

With AP, it felt like there really wasn't that much opportunity for the characters to grow and adapt because the setting stayed the same for so long. The Pyramid Head event were okay at inducing trauma in those who were kidnapped, but other than that? Blah. The ones who really grew were those in leadership roles (a;lskdf Garrus did such a good job aj;sldfa), but the rest of us didn't have much of an opportunity if we didn't create our own drama. Tifa primarily stayed the same (although she was very stressed out from having only Hojo around for months and then suddenly getting Sephiroth of all people so she had that one breakdown but that was really it), I never really did anything with Beat, and I never really got a chance to explore the whole "wtf is going on am i really dead what does this mean for me OH GOD WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I GO BACK HOME?" thing with poor Harry ( ... )

Yeah, I agree completely with that. Halloween was the best precisely because it gave us stuff to do...but other than that, there's a reason why Badou, Halle and Garrus were pretty much the most popular and awesome-inducing characters there. They had stuff to do, reasons to start the stuff that kept the game interesting. I think the DN cast was going pretty strong for a while there as well, because the characters were always meant for the careful cat-and-mouse game relationships AP inspired. Keeping Allen busy was almost impossible, because I had to focus solely on relationships, and...just didn't work. He's not very romantic in canon so that was pretty much out except for a slight crush (which was pushing it as it was), and even though he tries to befriend everyone he can he's always at a distance, so to speak, from them. Plus, he's so focused on salvation for akuma and defeating the Earl that he just doesn't function very well being cooped up in one place for long without making any progress (one of the manga arcs explored this).
