It's what got me more into Merlin. That and the slashy undertones. :) But Colin and Bradley really make the show even more likeable, and the historical accuracy is tolerable enough. One can be a fan and make fun of it at the same time. I love it. :)

I'm hoping for Merlin showing how powerful he is, but Merlin wouldn't want to be a show off either, imho. He needs to use it for: helping others, defending himself, and doing good. I don't mind a Merlin that goes a little to the dark side, but not overly (for the show of course, but in fanfics it's anything goes!)

If you're referring to the response to tommorrow's episode, I think people are probably just disappointed that the plot is being played for comedy rather than drama, despite the obvious potential for darkness and angst. I really like the comedy on Merlin was well but I am disappoint that this specific episode is apparently comedy-oriented.

In that case one might say they shouldn't have gone for the darker plotline. :P IDK, Doctor Who is in the same slot and they get away with the Doctor doing some srsly horrifying shit from time to time.

I am still majorly looking forward to tommorrow's episode, it looks delightful either way.

I love the humour in Merlin! If it didn't have those comedic elements, I wouldn't enjoy it as much. :) I mean, a show has to seriously go off the rails with the comedy for me to dislike it; I thoroughly enjoyed the troll episode of Merlin. It's not my favourite ep. by a long way, but I didn't dislike it!

I think fandom should remember that it's first and foremost a family show. It's marketed towards kids. Humour and light-hearted moments should be expected. It's not always going to be about the angst and the death and the killing!

I honestly don't see how people can take Merlin as seriously as they do. Between continuity issues, the humour, really bad historical inaccuracy, and the fact that every other episode/series they reset everybody's relationships back to default ... it's kind of hard to take it completely seriously. :P

TL;DR - I Merlin when it's funny, and I like it when it's serious. (But actually, I kind of prefer when it's light-hearted and whimsical, that's the show I fell in love with, bad special effects and all.)

I am okay with the troll episode, of course; there were plenty of good parts in it. I'm just trying to remember what episode was my least favorite that had that kind of humor in it and that's all I coudl think of. I didn't mind the goblin episode either.
(I think my least favorite episode of Merlin was the one with the manticore and Gaius' old flame returning; can't remember the name of the episode)

You're so right. It's supposed to be a family show... but I don't think it's specifically aimed for kids, is it? They seem to have something for everyone in it. I think that they make sure it doesn't go above a PG rating? I'm not sure if any of the episodes got a PG13 rating, did it? I mean, the Potter movies got that dark, but I don't recall if any Merlin episodes did. Anyway, yeah, there is humor and slapstick jokes to be expected in Merlin because of the whole family show thing.

Exactly! No one should take the show seriously. It's escapism, right? Just like Colin said.

Your last sentence = win.

You're so right. The show can make you laugh one minute and then pull on your heart strings the next. That's just one of the many reasons why I love the show. :)

I love the comedy. Sometimes comedy is needed to offset the drama and make it more pointed and stark. Besides, once in a while we all need a good laugh. I found the Troll ones very funny, even with the fart jokes and there was seriousness behind it. My favorite episode so far is the one from last week where we had dire straits and then Merlin's ineptitude on being an assassin. I mean, really hilarious and serious at the same time.

I'd ignore the nay-sayers. They need to lighten up.
