Has it really been more than two months since I've posted here? Insert usual round of excuses, apologies, and what-have-you.

I've been spending all my time on a rewrite of my 2007 NaNo novel, The Extent of the Damage. It's going wonderfully, and as mentioned, taking up all my time. For approximately two months now, I've been intending to write ( Read more... )

If you reach the point of wanting people to read a draft, I'd love to do so.

(And, what's up with TheOverworld these days?)

Thanks, I'll definitely keep you in mind when I get to the point of looking for readers.

What's up with The Overworld will be the subject of the post that happens after the theoretical post about Damage. :) The short answer is that I'm taking a break from it to give new ideas time to percolate.

I love your newsletter essay. The idea that writing is like a magic act, and that, as a reader, you're always trying to see how the trick works--that's just how I read too (so it *must* be the best way!). Such a rich experience, trying to get inside a writer's mind, imagine what her options were, trying to figure why she chose this one or that one, and whether it was her best choice or not. I watch movies that way too, even though I have no cinematic ambitions of my own. And art and music and the backs of cereal boxes... (I get the feeling you do too ( ... )

Arrggghhh! I take back all I said about there being so many "viable approaches" to writing. Turns out there are none at all. At least not for me. I've spent the last few hours re-reading parts of my work-in-progress--haven't done this much cringing since the hair stylist unveiled my prom-night bouffant.

There's some quotation about how writers are people who find writing harder than everyone else does. So you're doing it right. ;) I understand just how you're feeling. There are moments when I think about this current project in ways that make me wonder what the hell I'm thinking even trying to tell this story. And then I put those doubts aside and press on. Because what else can you do?
