Gothic is a, sober, somber   batshit Ken Russell film about the poet Lord Byron, as played by Gabriel Byrne and fellow writer Percy Bysshe Shelley, as played by Julian Sands, having sex, or at the very least trying to have sex, with everyone in their vicinity.

It is also a filmic representation of Natasha Richardson's, (who play's Percy's wife, ( Read more... )

My nipples enjoyed watching this post.

Though I will NEVER IN A BILLION YEARS understand why he chose an unattractive 40 year old dude to portray a sexy guy who died when he was 24 and who was A TEENIE when Byron laeped him.

LOL see there are sometimes when pasties are just no good for them. I don't really understand it either, apart from Spall's appalling, frightmare facial expressions making me lol.

Plus for some reason they went with a version of the events where Byron didn't really want to shag Polly except as a last resort. I spose if they had made him good looking/young a lot of it, the sexual repression etc might not have quite worked as well.

Still it was a stupid version to go with I think. This is why you should write fic.

lol I guess they had to make up a reason for him to be randomly against everyone and not liked very well and I guess it was TOO HARD to do it with a sexy nineteen year old.

Though I mean, in Byron's correspondence, when he picked Polidori everyone was like LOL IC WUT U DID THAR BYRON HAVE FUN IN BUTTSEXLAND. I MEAN ITALY.

lol

This movie was insane! I watched it last year, after you posted about it and I think right after Natasha Richardson's unfortunate death. What a movie...

Lol man it is the moast batshit of all batshit. I can't get over how much I love it despite that. I mean it's not legitimately good but it pereveres in being insane for so long that I have to respect it on a deep level. I mean especially to make a film like that about Byron and Shelley of all people.

It is on all sorts of level terrifying. Some bits are genuinely unsettling and hella spooky and moving and then it veers from that to a constant question of WHY IS HE DOING THAT? WHY? WHY? SWEET GOD WHY? I mean this is the film where there Gabriel Byrne rants about someone being afraid of their own cock.

I mean.

??

Classic isn't even approaching it's batshit awesomeness. You cannot fail to lol at it for it's audacity.

Oh you truly are it is certainly something. Like I said I think some bits are legitimately good and I very much enjoy the crazy Eighties synth soundtrack. But overwhelmingly it's astounding in it's audacity.

My boyfriend saw it years ago and he thought it was amazing! ;D

A synth soundtrack with Regency clothes??? This I *have* to see!!!

It's interesting that no one else has tried to tell the same story in film since - presumably it's a hard act to follow!
