The thing is, angsty, emo Ianto works OK for season 1 and given the call from Tosh, I assume that you mean it's between seasons? In which case I think it is canon, look at the email he sent Gwen apologising for his behaviour when she was leading. (If you count those emails as canon) shows he didn't cope well.

Really, this was beautiful, and (given the 200 caveats I have just put in) I think it is in character as well.

Really really lovely. This is completely how I like my angst right now. Really beautiful.

And I never understand why some people worry so much about Ianto being too emo...I think he is a very thoughtful person and very emotional on the inside. There is a difference between that and writing him as a OTT cry baby. So don't worry babe, this was great.
