My friends live in San Leandro. They like it okay, but they have a house in a nice neighborhood there. It is 10-15 minutes to Oakland by car.

I'm not sure if their neighborhood has a name, but here is a link to google maps:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=818+Collier+Drive,+San+Leandro,+CA+94577&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=34.122306,79.013672&ie=UTF8&ll=37.729351,-122.144794&spn=0.008316,0.01929&z=16

It is all single family homes on their street but their might be apartments closer to the bigger streets (Estudillo, Bancroft, McArthur).

There are a couple of apartments currently available in my building.

The managment company is at http://www.cedarproperties.com/ and the building itself is the "Glen Echo" listing. It's located at the base of Piedmont Avenue about a mile or so (580 runs through it, so I can't figure out the exact distance) from Lake Merritt.

It's a nice quiet neighborhood, assuming you don't mind a little road noise from 580. I grew up in Chicago, so I'm used to it, but my roommate is from the country, and he hates the road noise.
