East Bay Home Help!

Can anyone offer insight on San Leandro and Hayward as places to live. THey are rather close to where I will be teaching in the Fall and would like as much info and details about the ins and outs, good and bad, as possible. I am also consider Oakland Hills, Piedmont, Montclair and Lake Merritt. I will be teaching in the vicinity of 98th and Bancroft in East Oakland. I don't desire to live too close to work.
