From Millennium Elephant:

Local Elections OUGHT to be more important to people, because they are for the THINGS that you use MOST OFTEN. (After all, you want to use the PAVEMENT every day, but HOW OFTEN do you want a SMALL WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST????)

Discuss.

well my views are somewhat coloured by my mother being a local councillor from when I was about 12 onwards but I do agree to a certain extend, was slipping out of agreeing but then listening to my sister talk about what she does as a local councillor the size of budget she controls etc I'm swinging back to a strong agree. I recognise it's a lot easier to focus on National/international politics because the whole "what can I do, why should I do anything there are 1,000,000+ others who could do it for me, my voice doesn't count sod it I'll just look out for me" ethos is actually a lot less effort than thinking "bugger I need to write/phone/do something about that because there's only 100 of us whom it affects so the consequences of me doing/not doing anything are statistically quantifiable so I'll write/phone" Then you get involved and it can become emotionally draining because your voice should count but what if it is ignored?... etc etc. Also if people engage with local politics they tend to notice what's going on locally a bit more ( ... )

Pretty much what I was thinking. And I did say "Discuss" - invites an essay, really ;-)
