Oh boy. This was going to take a lot of patience and work; Tifa had always been so much better at explaining the workings of nature and whatnot to the kids when they asked. Cloud usually just stammered through a response before helplessly referring them to her.

Thank God she was here.

"That's...it's the sun." How did someone explain the sun to a child that had lived in a cave his entire life? Shrugging lamely, Cloud gestured to the sky. "Don't look straight at it," he managed to warn him, as he motioned. "It'll hurt your eyes."

Simon gave his eyes a moment to adjust, then lowered his eyes, glancing at the sun before quickly looking away, instead focusing on Cloud. He was tall, as tall as his father had been, at least, and his eyes widened. That was one huge sword. "... Y-you're Cloud, really? You're the voice in the book...?"

He gestured off to the side, where the book he'd awoken with was still on the ground where he'd left it. He'd been in too much of a rush to escape the boar to take it with him.

Cloud paused for a moment before -as gently as he could- he explained himself. Noticing Simon's anxiety when he glanced at First Tsurugi he hastily sheathed it at his back, and bent to pick up Simon's journal for him. "Kind of. These things...let you talk to other people." He gestured to his own journal in his belt. "We all have one."

"... O... oh." Simon blinked, eyes wandering about. He hadn't had much chance to explore his surroundings before, and couldn't resist the urge to have a look. After a moment, he turned back to Cloud, fidgeting a little. "Um... Mister Cloud... where are we? Is this the surface?"

Cloud paused at the title, a little thrown; none of the kids in the orphanage ever called he or Tifa "mister," or "miss," and it was strange to hear. "It's just Cloud. And yeah...this is the surface." However, it wasn't safe to stand around chatting in a forest full of monsters, so Cloud gestered for Simon to follow, waiting patiently for him to begin walking.
