There sure are a lot of older people attending the party, which is a given considering Hubert is a mere 10-year-old. Even so, it makes being alone that much more unsettling. He'd come with his brother and others, but Asbel has the tendency to wander, and in a bustling setting like this it's easy to lose sight of anyone. Just his luck.

So Hubert wanders around the buffet line, eyes shifting right to left and left to right in search of familiar faces. Maybe going to the party was a bad idea, after all. He could be "home" right now, reading an interesting book on the cozy couch with few disturbances . . .

"Ahh, why did it turn out this way?" he mumbles anxiously to himself.

He follows suit, still a bit boggled by how she can keep piling food on her plate. "You're a Hero!?" he exclaims in quiet shock, looking up at Pao-lin with wide eyes. "That's amazing . . . "

"Thank you!" She's a bit thrown by Hubert's surprise, since she's pretty sure she told him about her Hero job the first time they met, but then she remembers that this Hubert doesn't know that. Pao-lin begins leading the two of them over to a miraculously empty table. "It's hard work, and dangerous most of the time, but it's a lot of fun."

Hubert takes a seat across Pao-lin, listening intently. "And you started at 11? It wasn't scary . . . ?" He looks down at his lap and plays with his hands, unnerved by the mere thought of dangerous work.

"Oh, it was definitely pretty scary," Pao-lin says through a mouthful of food. Graceful, this one. "But...I was happy to be doing something useful with my powers, too. It felt good to be able to help people like that." And she didn't feel like as much of a freak, either. Would've been a little hard to, considering she was surrounded with other NEXT like herself at HeroTV.

Not touching his food just yet, out of curiosity he continues, "What kind of powers do you have?" Every Hero had a special ability, didn't he or she? It's worth looking into.

"I can generate and control lightning!" She demonstrates by holding up a fist and producing a few little sparks around it -- a mini lightshow.

oh well as far as I'm concerned NaNo doesn't exist the moment I get a Hubert tag :Db lightningcute November 28 2011, 01:43:19 UTC
"It wasn't always easy," Pao-lin explains. "It took a few years before I could control my powers so that I wouldn't accidentally hurt people."

yeees, I get to hoard Pao-lin. *3* outbranch November 28 2011, 01:45:15 UTC
The way she puts it truly does sound heroic, and Hubert appreciates her efforts even though they're from different places. "But if you started at 11, doesn't that mean you were doing all of this at a really early age?"

excuse me while I steal all of Hubert's non-Tales CR, I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND............. lightningcute November 28 2011, 01:47:29 UTC
Pao-lin nods as she chews on a piece of turkey. "I got my powers when I was six years old. And I started training in kung fu the year before that, too."

He lets out a breath of awe. Training at five years old is intense. "I'm twice that age, but I haven't done much of anything . . . You're so dedicated."

this Hero is going to haunt him for the rest of his life if I have anything to say about it lightningcute November 28 2011, 01:55:10 UTC
"Ah, well, it was something I really wanted to do," she says. "I watched a lot of kung fu movies when I was little and I thought that what they were doing was pretty cool, so I tried doing it myself. My parents didn't like it at first, but then I almost broke my leg when I missed on a flying kick, so they said that I might as well learn how to do things the right way so I wouldn't hurt myself." She giggles.

I fully support this and intend to reciprocate. outbranch November 28 2011, 02:08:42 UTC
"Movies?" he repeats curiously. He has no idea what that is, but he continues, "Um, I'm glad that you didn't break your leg. That would've been awfully painful." But boy, she has guts to rebel and do reckless things like that. It reminds him of Asbel.

He is gonna get trolled so hard by her and neither of them will be aware of it. XD lightningcute November 28 2011, 02:17:40 UTC
Pao-lin hums as she takes a moment to think of how to explain movies to someone not familiar with them. "They're stories. That you watch."

. . . that's hilariously sad, f-ffft. outbranch November 28 2011, 02:21:22 UTC
Stories that you watch? Simple enough. He can immediately picture it. "Oh, so they're like performances or plays? I don't think I've ever seen anything that could be dangerous like that . . . "
