[Jack Sparrow wakes up in the same place---and position---he has been standing in for over the last 24 hours or so: trapped in a pillory as punishment for crimes committed against Nami and Zoro.

In the middle of the plaza.

And when his eyes open, he remembers everything. Everything. And just wants a]

buggering first class ticket out of this buggering blasted blighted LUCETI.

[slaying]

[ which means it is just about her cue to say, quietly: ] You're married.

[slaying]

I mean, I was just fake-married but you're...you got married, Jack.

[ she hadn't meant for that to come out so accusatory. ]

There he goes again! Marvel at how Sparrow slides down that steep precipice of Buffy's Good Graces!

[He pulls at the restraints as though this sudden surge of energy will free him, which of course it doesn't.]

[slaying]

I didn't...[ no, she abandons that sentence before she even gets into it. ] I talked to Albert. He doesn't think it's the kind of thing that should stick. [ if she's skeptical, she doesn't show it. and a lesser constitution might have choked on saying albert's name, given his position in her life last week. but buffy simply charges on through it.

besides, it's important that jack knows she followed up such a question on his behalf. ]

[There is simply silence at this. Jack has no intention of making it stick anyway, Buffy. If it had been the stickable kind? He would have fled the village, far and fast.]

[ and in his silence, it rapidly comes to the point where she's rationalizing this for her own sake too. ] It's not like there was a marriage certificate or anything. Plus -- experiment.

[There is a slight sigh, then another round of "see if you can twist your wrists out of this binding," and then stillness. However, now that Sparrow has had it put to him in these terms, it doesn't seem so bad.

He will still have to talk about it with Raine, of course---but she would surely be feeling the same way.]

[ all that he has said so far has been so...disquieting. sarcasm enough to put even her to shame. buffy wonders how much of that is up to the pillory and how much the experiment or whether it's the both all mixed in.

so she draws her hand back to herself and sits with a war going on in her mind. should she just ask him? would that be easier? is it the wrong time to ask? ]

[The fingernails, or what is left of them, now freed, begin their incessant scratching once more.]

[ ...of course. the loudness of her sigh is rather unintentional. ]

I'd much prefer it if she never found out, hm? About it. That whole---thing.

[The loudness registers and causes Jack to wince but he HAS to know.]

[ god, they barely talked before the experiment. buffy doesn't expect them to suddenly be secret-sharing buddies now that they've spent ten days as siblings. but then there was that soft spot for sisters. ]

[Another pause. More scratching. Then Jack hears himself doing it and stops. Then he forgets that he has heard himself doing it and begins again. Then he starts humming a tune about a mermaid and a lobster. Then a tune about a lobster and an abalone diver. Then a tune about an abalone diver and a mermaid. Then the one about the mermaid and the lobster again.

Why is she here. He twists his wrists again, but even though they are now sporting matching sores, they are not slick enough or narrow enough to slide out of their bonds.]

Wonder if this was how Calypso felt. Feels.

[ she hears it every time he begins to scratch. her own fingers flex sympathetically but she isn't sure what to do other than to reach out and hold onto him again -- and now she's not even sure if he wants that. ]
