Cocooned in a bundle of blankets, with her bare toes peeping out from the bottom of them for her place on the chair, Milly takes the cup from him and waits for it to cool. The feel of the blankets on top of her wings is weird and alien, almost too strange to be truly real ( ... )

Don't worry, Milly-he's recalling the last time they'd been alone together as well, and it only makes him extremely guilt-ridden at the thought. It shouldn't have happened that way, that morning. It should have been different. He really fucked things up, huh...?

But he snaps out of the thought at the sound of her voice. It had that sort of power over him, as much as he didn't want to say it outright. And after a beat, his lips curl into a smile. That was also another power she'd gained over him.

"Hey, careful there. I know it smells nice, but it won't taste nice if you scald your taste buds off."

But a moment passes, as he realizes he'll have to get the awful stuff over quickly. Shoulders straightening up, hands laced and hanging between his knees casually, he leans in and grows serious.

"... What's the last thing that happened back home, Milly?"

He has to know, or it'll be one of those little things that haunt his shoulder.

When he closes the distance she sits bolt upright in surprise, not expecting the move, and then turns to look at him ( ... )

Wolfwood silently watches her struggle with the words, knowing exactly what words she was working to gloss over, and by the end he can't help but chuckle at those last few sentences-a sad little chuckle, but one nonetheless.

"You were right on the money, then..." and in a lower, softer voice, "I wouldn't have wanted it to sit around going to waste, when there's fighting to be done, after all."

But it was good, to hear this. He knew she was intentionally avoiding the more tender things, but she was speaking bits and pieces of the story Wolfwood hadn't got to hear before.

After a beat, he raises his mug of coffee to his lips, pausing just beforehand.

"What'd you girls do in the meantime? While he was going off to finish things?"

"I was helping to build a well," she replies. "When Mr. Vash was getting better, I started helping out the townspeople with their new well. Meryl needed to look after Mr. Vash and we needed to find some extra money. I was going to get up and go back to work to help again tomorrow, but then I woke up and I was here."

She looks at her cocoa again and carefully takes another sip of it, humming at the taste.

"Mmm, this is really good cocoa. Thank you," she repeats, forgetting that she had already thanked him.

She's a little nervous, but she can't work out why.

"We were going to stay in the town until Mr. Vash came back, he only just left, Meryl and I really hadn't talked about it that much."
