[Like his last transmitted report, Albert speaks over the network with a camera projecting his image. He begins speaking, typing the report and appropriate links as he goes along.]
Today is May 8, year 3 of this experiment cycle. This is usually the middle of the New Feather cycle, but as many of you may have noticed, there has been a noticeable lack of newcomers so far.
To New Feathers from the previous month, my name is Albert Silverberg, and I am also a resident in the village. I am currently speaking through a secure system that is filtered specifically to Luceti residents over their journals, so the Malnosso Organization cannot hear or see what I am reporting.
I would like to emphasize that the Organization cannot see the information that is contained in my reports. They may see the references you make to these entries if you link to them across the journal system. While we have avoided detection thus far, everyone should refrain from making references to these entries over the journals.
If you must provide New Feathers with this information, meet the individual in person and show the information over your own journal. But these updates take place every month or so, and they will eventually see these updates next month.
All newcomers and long-time residents should regularly review
the guide to Luceti, maintained by Professor Raine Sage. New transparency from the Malnosso Organization has led to some previously-secret information being publicized through the guide. The following information is supplemental to the guide, but should not be mentioned over the journal system.
Important Individuals and Groups to Know
"John" -- The guide covers the scientist known as "John" in good detail. He has been trapped in this world for a long time, and is credited for the development of the barriers that surround our village and similar enclosures. Though cold and hard to talk to, he is considered brilliant and highly revered both by the Malnosso Organization and individuals outside of the barrier. The Organization does not know he killed a man named Tyr, that "Jacob" was the one John revived, or that he has collaborated with "Rem."
"Jacob" -- A former low-ranking member of the Malnosso Organization who helped run surveillance of the village. He was sympathetic towards our situation and assisted us at the risk of his own personal safety. He was imprisoned by the Organization when he was found out, and then taken into the barrier by John without the Organization’s approval. He was killed by Third Party cultists in a ritual that is meant to permanently remove people from the cycle of life and death in this world, but John managed to revive him through unknown means. The Organization does not know that he has the one who John revived.
ANI -- The Automated Neutral Intelligence system, created by a woman that some residents refer to as "Rem." ANI captures information based on the decisions of its creator and has perhaps the most complete records of this world. Unfortunately, there is an unknown amount of information that has been marked confidential. ANI cannot be contacted over the journals and the Organization is not aware of its contact with us.
"Rem" -- As already mentioned, the woman dubbed "Rem" is the creator of ANI and an observer of our predicament. She is not a member of the Malnosso Organization, and is more sympathetic to our plight than others we have encountered. She very recently assisted individuals who have the ability to summon creatures from their world, but with a strong warning: summoning creatures runs the risk of affecting your home world. This may in turn harm you and others from your world. She cannot be contacted over the journals and should not be mentioned over the journals, especially since "Sir Catherine" has caught snatches of surveillance of residents mentioning her over the journals.
Tyr is a deceased former resident of Luceti who was highly respected within the Organization and beyond. Regarded as a hero and a born leader, he supposedly performed many good deeds during his time in this world; John has compared "hero-types" in Luceti to Tyr following his death. John killed Tyr towards the beginning of this year, using the same method the Third Party would later use on Jacob. The Malnosso do not know that John was the one who killed Tyr, so refrain from mentioning that over the journals.
The Malnosso Organization CEO ("Catherine") -- An old man who has recently become the head of the Malnosso Organization after overthrowing the previous head. He is eccentric but friendlier than others in the Organization who we have had contact with, and also likely shrewder than he appears. (For all of his oddness, one does not raise mutiny and succeed without a fair amount of wit.) He has said that he initially joined the Organization many years ago, when the Organization was still creating cities, saving lives, and freely sharing their technology. "A regular board of super heroes." Sir Catherine should not be told anything listed here at this time. Careless mentioning of "Rem" over the journals has already alerted him to her presence.
The Third Party -- Referred to as "cultists" by Sir Catherine, we do not know what they refer to themselves. Last August, they infiltrated the barrier with the intention of killing us to remove us from the barrier. They may be the natural residents of this world, as they have been "the problem" for the Organization before the Organization was politically etablished 200 years ago. They possess larger wings than ourselves and very strong natural Shifting ability, and we know elite troops we encountered last year were restricted in their ability by John's synthetic Shift barrier. They have been known to Shift weapons out of metal, elements represented by the Filial spirits, and even blood. The highest-ranking individual any residents have met is the General, who was slain by Buffy Summers. (But they are also revived by this world, so the General may be encountered in the future.)
The Nature and Politics of Luceti
Most of the information concerning the basics of Luceti can be found in the guide.
The very nature of this world is cyclical -- if something happens once, it will happen again without fail. If someone dies in Luceti, whether through accident, murder, or natural causes, they will be revived. If someone disappears from this world, they will return again in the future, though there appears to be no pattern to how people arrive or vanish.
The Malnosso Organization is operated by people who have been trapped in this world for a much longer period of time than any of us; "Jacob," a lowly security worker within the Organization, had been trapped in Luceti for 10 years. We can surmise that people who have been in Luceti longer would hold higher positions of power.
We are contained in a barrier to be experimented upon by the Organization. The particular long-term project we are test subjects for is known as the Luceti Project. The Third Party disapproves of this experimentation, and broke into the barrier with the intent to kill us all. As we later learned, residents who die are revived outside of the barrier and have to be intercepted by the Organization to be brought back into the barrier. A mass slaughter would have allowed the Third Party to capture many of us upon revival.
Both groups continue to hide their true objectives, making both ultimately untrustworthy. Our ignorance makes us useful and valuable to both groups; knowing too much makes us expendable.
Electricity in Luceti
The village was changed by the Malnosso Organization following the successful battle at Desset City, with electricity and new appliances available throughout the buildings. Residents may request specific items from Sir Catherine, but there is no guarantee that he will approve every request.
The following information was provided by Cid Highwind, who will also teach about electricity safety at his repair shop.
- There are new appliances in the buildings that use electricity to run. Electricity is the same kind of stuff that makes lightning when it storms, only it's generated by people and not nature. If you have never heard of it before, remember that it is similar to lightning with all of the same properties. It's dangerous and it will kill you if you are not careful.
- A basic list of new appliances: Refrigerators to keep food cold in your kitchens, electric stoves and ovens to cook your food, air conditioning and heater units to warm up a place or cool it down, fans in the ceiling to circulate air, and water heaters to give you hot water for your sinks and bathrooms. New items have also appeared in the shops, such as microwaves and hot plates. If you don't know what something does, don't attempt to use it. Electric appliances can burn a place down if used improperly, so find someone who has experienced with electrical appliances and get them to assist you.
- The small, rectangular objects on the walls now are called outlets and are used by plugging appliances into them to give them power. They always have power going through them. Attempting to insert improper objects in the outlets will result in an electric shock (as several residents can attest).
[There's a sketch of a standard plastic plug that can be inserted in unused outlets here.]
There are "outlet plugs" that are made of translucent plastic and can be inserted in unused outlets. If you don't know what you're doing, put one of those in every outlet you see so nothing gets in there accidentally.
- Water and metal conduct electricity. "Conducting" means it transfers really quickly along that path. Think of it like using a wooden spoon to cook and then a metal spoon; heat travels much faster up the metal spoon. That's conducting. Dropping any of this stuff in water means anything in the water is gonna get cooked, almost instantly. A person's body is mostly water so that means we all conduct it, too. That's why it hurts so much when you get electrocuted, and it will can afflict varying amounts of injury, such as burns, vision loss, or even memory loss in severe cases. Again, don't do put anything in the outlets that should not be put into it.
If you need more information on electricity, Cid Highwind and other residents have more experience with it and can answer your questions.
Recent Happenings & Our Current Situation
In March, approximately 30 residents were recruited by the Organization to fight in a city outside of the barrier called Desset City. The occupying force was made up of approximately 200 Third Party cultists. The Organization provided requested supplies for the draftees and "rewarded" the village as a whole with electricity after the battle had ended. It should be noted that draftees were of any age or fighting ability, meaning that anyone contained in the barrier may be drafted.
The last week or so of April, residents were widely affected by an Organization experiment's side effects. Those affected had many of their thoughts made visible or audible, to the point where journals would record those thoughts.
As already mentioned both here and in the guide, the beginning of each month usually comes with the arrival of several New Feathers. However, that does not appear to be the case this time around. The last time this occurred, August of last year, it became very apparent that the Malnosso were preoccupied with external issues; that was the same month when the Third Party managed to infiltrate the barrier and attack the village.
As of now, we have little idea what may be occurring behind the scenes. It is likely nothing good.
There is a
suggestion box in the village, under the responsibility of Hugo of Karaya. If you have any suggestions you believe should be brought to others' attention, you may use the suggestion box as an alternative to writing over the journals.
If you have any other announcements that you would like added, please let me know.
