I wasn't soon enough before Aerith pushed the twin doors that would lead to the streets of Traverse Town open and breathed a much-needed breath of fresh air. A suffocating sort of quiet lingered in the hallway outside the hotel room. Aerith didn't excuse herself to the hall, which meant either she had returned to her room or retreated outside. Whichever case, she deserved a couple moments to her own thoughts before he went to check on her. Aerith hadn't been anticipating that anyone would follow her, so, when Cloud made his presence known, she started visibly and tried to hastily wipe the tears that had fallen away. She hated crying in front of other people and tried to forced a smile to help her case, but that effort just ended in a blatant failure.

"I'll be okay," she assured him softly. And she was quite certain that she would be. It would just take her a few moments to pull herself together. "It's just... Well, it's a lot of things." Aerith hesitated, fairly sure that Cloud wouldn't want her to start bawling as she laid her feelings flat on the table or anything. It was nice enough that he'd come to check on her in the first place, really.

She tilted her head back up to the sky, following his eyes and just trying to enjoy the rare, peaceful atmosphere.

"I'm sorry for just running off like that."

Since it having people cry on him didn’t happen that often, he wasn’t sure on how to he was supposed to act around people when they did; In the past he would just fidget, most often with his hair or weaponry. With Aerith, who did a pretty good job at keeping face, he still couldn’t help but notice-even if he wasn’t known for his “observational skills”, as Aerith had pointed out before. Opting to act normal was probably best since it was pretty obvious she didn’t want that to be acknowledged ( ... )

If only that were it... A touch of sadness came to color Aerith's forced smile, somehow making it seem much more genuine ( ... )
