The gag is that in a by-the-numbers fantasy novel, the young hero meets an aged mentor - usually a wizard of some stripe, generally portrayed by an old guy wearing a funny hat.
Obviously Gandalf originates the trope. You'll see it again and again now that I've mentioned it, and probably remember ten more of them now.
Sadly true on the LAPD as evinced by the three people they've already shot for just being in trucks that kinda looked like Chris's truck.
They've already been caught tampering with the evidence on the truck with the two old ladies in it. There's pictures of the truck before the scene was roped off and after the scene was roped off and there are more bulletholes in the truck - ie. they sprayed more holes in the truck to disguise what had already took place.
For a guy "taking on the gang" he's got a funny way of doing it. He's killed a non-LAPD woman and her non-LAPD fiance and a Riverside (not LAPD) officer.
