Spelunking- Horta style.

Jul 21, 2005 21:01

It's edging toward afternoon as Naraht and Peter make their way into the rocky area behind Milliway's gardens. It was in this place that Naraht hollowed out a cave to sleep in before he found a way to master the stairs. But now he's got something more extensive on his mind. He's going to hunt a cave ( Read more... )

Peter had gotten his helmet on, and lit, and he was wearing the industrial style gloves on his hands. He normally wore steel toed boots, so that'll work down here.

"Ready, Naraht. Let 'er rip."

Peter's face paled, "It means we should run." Was that a growling sound in the distance?

"Right about now..."

"Run?"

The growl came again, louder this time.

"Right, run!"

The pair of them started back the way they came...but Naraht screeched to a halt as he realized something. "Put it in reverse, Dr. Venkman. It's coming from that way. We've got to find or make another exit!"

"Crap! And I left my proton pack back in my room." Peter groaned.

"Alright, then let's press on, but double time." He yelled as he headed back in their original direction.

They flee through the twisting cave. Occasionally, another growl echos down to them, each one nearer than the last.

Ladies and gentlemen, certain laws of Narrative Causality cannot be disobeyed. You all know where this is going, right?

There is water running up ahead. Pretty soon, they come out into a large cavern with a stream running through.

And it's a dead end because the stream enters and exits through holes in the wall too small for either of them to pass through.

"Okay, time to make a way out," Naraht says.

Peter's not thrilled with this idea, but like hell he was going to stick around.

"whatever you do, make it fast. That sucker's a-moving."

Naraht sounds the walls. The stream outlet is closest to the outside.

"Water makes wonderful caverns," he says, easing himself into the water. "But Mother bless, I hate being in it."

He starts to dig as fast as he can, trusting to the water's flow to carry his acids away from Peter as the human follows behind.

Peter then remembered vaguely how Naraht looked after his near drowning.

"Wait, the water's not going to be a problem for you, is it?"

"Not as long as I plan to be in it," he says. "And I'm not fully immersed this time."

Again the growl from behind them and Naraht strives to go a little faster. They've gone 20 meters though solid rock now. The stream has veered off through another tunnel, but that tunnel goes away from the surface. "Peter, I'm sorry, but you're gonna have to hang back until I'm through." Naraht calls back. "Only another 15 feet. I'm sure of it."

Peter nodded, and thought for a moment. He never tried to consciously use the PK before. It always just came out emotionally. Granted, he was scared as hell certainly helped on the emotional part.

Mentally he went to his stronghold where his abilities were secured, and touched the walls. Here, the PK was here. He touched, and felt it respond.

The water was already moving, so that made things easier. Objects in motion staying in motion, now he just needed to reverse that motion away from the Horta.

It was looking like an forcefield of air was forming around the Horta, pushing the water away from Naraht.

Naraht felt the water receed and redoubled his efforts. He was nearly out. Just a few more feet and they'd be out in the open where they could maneuver or yelp for help. Almost there. Two feet, one foot...the wall was now just a thin rind that he could punch through easily. "Come on, Peter!" he yelled.

But, behind Peter came another growl, this one almost right on top of them...and it was accompanied by splashing.

"Peter, look...The hell?!"

The monster was almost right on top of the psychologist. It had all the things a monster was supposed to have; rank fur, sharp teeth, claws, horns.

But it was also the size of an average cat. It dogpaddled through the water intent on its pint-sized mayhem.

While Naraht was frozen, the wall behind him chose that moment to give way. He had burrowed out through a twenty foot rocky prominence...about halfway up.

The crater he left when he landed was sizable.

Peter was focusing on the water, so it took him a bit to notice what was coming behind him. He looked behind and laughed. He then heard the wall giving way.

"Naraht!" He yelled, and then the water was released from his efforts. It pushed him and the creature out through the hole, falling down towards the crater which was rapidly filling with water.

Poor Naraht. Exhausted from sprint-digging, shaken from a ten foot drop...and then soaked in water yet again.

Two splashes near him indicated heralded the arrival of Peter and their Fearsome Foe. Naraht shoved himself out of the water and looked his friend over for injury. He seemed to be a little bruised, but otherwise okay. Naraht then turned his attention to the Beast.

"THIS is what we were running from?!"

"Well, ok, they just showed this cheap animation of it in the movie. Wasn't expecting anything like that." Peter uneasily got to his feet.

"How you feeling?"

Naraht shakes himself. "Slightly waterlogged but nothing some good hot crude oil stew won't fix. How about you? Hey!"

The Beast of Aaauuuggghhh decided to attack Naraht at that point. The Horta grabbed him by the scruff of the neck with his fringe and held him way, hissing and growling. "Ok, now what do we do with the little monster?"

Peter shrugged, "I'll live." He wasn't that banged up after all.

He glanced at the little sucker. "Dunno, can think a few people I'd like to sic him on."

He grinned, "I'm sure Scribbles wouldn't mind a snack either."
