--I loved this story, was particularly captivated by the opening - but I'll admit, it did fail to chill me. Maybe her escape felt too easy, too logical, too "I knew this all along but didn't try it till I was desperate" that made me felt she was never really in danger? --

I think there was only so spooky I could make the story, with it being told to the kiddies, and a first-person narrator. I mean, you kind already know she makes it out, since she's telling the story. I'm glad you still liked it, even though it didn't spook you!
