You can pretend this is the official ending if you like. It's not dark, but it isn't a rainbow either ;)

Thank you for your comments during the series ♥

Oh. Oh! This is too good for words.

"Could you all kindly shut your gobs?" Gene asks, "I'm trying to get some kip here." I love him so, so much. <33333333333

"People always assumed I did so not knowing the meaning behind the Bowie song. The joke was on them." Hah, brilliant. Slightly meta-ish point, well made.

"Everyone at the community centre's missing you, but I've tried to fill the gap," Jackson says. "I call at least two people scumbags every day, and I called Pauline a nasty little scrote last night." Jackson! :D Great to see him pop up again.

Gene holds on tight. "I may flounder, but I'll never fall. Couldn't. You're always there to prop me up."...It's supposed to be sarcastic. He's going for mockery. It's one of the most sincere things he's said in his life. THIS. This is so perfect, I just...gah!

“And what if I told you that you should ‘cause I don’t love you back, Sam? I loved him. He’s not you.” Eeeeep. You're such a liar, Gene. Such. A. Liar. And I'm glad Sam knows well enough to realise that.

“I’ll always come back ( ... )

♥ ♥ Thank you for your wonderful comments throughout the series. They've always made me grin like a loon.

You picked out one of my favourite lines of the whole thing. :D

I'm glad he's sending Sam on this trip, not because I expect Sam the terminally persistent to back off because of it, but because it'll prove to everyone concerned that Sam's making an informed choice.

It makes the potentially claustrophobic and recursively coercive situation much less disturbing, which is often a good thing. ;)

Well, that was the idea in theory. But, you know, Sam.

I love this chapter so very much. It's so natural and perfect and RIGHT. Sam's tears at Gene's bedside, which moved me in a way I can't begin to describe. His decision to resign from the force, which is absolutely appropriate for Sam 2.0 even though it still hurts slightly even to think about it. Gene's very crafty sacrifice 'solution', the fact he worked it out with Ruth, the way that Sam is simultaneously excited and alarmed by the prospect of travelling the world. And how, when Gene says he doesn't love him, Sam doesn't believe a single word of it... and a few beats later, Gene's saying, "Sam, I'm yours now." He's so *transparent* in his mendacity, the Gene Genie <333 ( ... )

Saaaaaam. I love Sam 2.0 so much. When he was all, "fuck that noise" to Gene saying he'd loved Sam 1.0, but not him? That whole section came to me when I was walking to work, and I had such a huge grin, because his confidence was lovely. When I got to my desk, I had to grab some paper, write it down, and secret it away, hah!

P.S. ;) Had to.

P.P.S. Hmmm. I prefer to let people decide for themselves.

Loved this series Loz, to the bitter end. Sad it's over now because I would get so giddy everytime a new chapter was posted but this is good place for it stop (besides the epilogue of course!). I'm also glad "the question" was never explicitly answered, and I enjoy the ambiguity of younger Sam suggesting older Sam set this whole thing up. I agree it probably wasn't the case but I mean hey, you never know ;D

Ruth brings baby pictures and Gene isn't stupid enough to think she's not sending him a not-so-secret message.
Oh Ruth <3

Bitter end? Bittersweet, I hope ;)

Thanks so much! I am sad to finish, but happy too, because, like you, I think this was a natural place to end it. There's only so many times a couple can come together and split apart before we no longer give a damn.
