I've never wanted to be the kind of person who only works for money. I work damn hard at all kinds of things without expecting a cent. If I were a 'money is the be-all and end-all' kind of person, I never would have become a teacher

Teaching will eat your soul. Every time. And this kind of situation is such a vicious circle, because the rest of the staff get pissed off and disheartened, and so they're constantly complaining because that's how they feel, and the general atmosphere of complaint makes it a hundred times worse. And - the kids pick up on it. I'd lay money that the dip in their behaviour is more to do with the vibe they're picking up, and more so in a school where the children's home life is unsatisfactory because they crave the security and happiness they can get at school.
And through it all, the perpetrator of all this misery sails blithely on, convinced that he (in this case) is god's gift to education and that he's just saddled with a bunch of whingers. It's an utter bitch, and I wish you didn't have to live through it.
I mean, our dissatisfaction as a staff is definitely affecting the way we work. We're only human, after all.
But, also, the fact that the breakfast program/sports program/swimming program/movie nights/discos are now pretty much extinct completely adds to it. Sport and Dance was so brilliant because it was the kids getting to excel and enjoy life a little, do something different. The community has one youth centre that's literally a tin fucking shed --- that's it --- and we're surprised they go around vandalising things? If we had more extra-curricular activities up like there used to be, things would be better. But he doesn't even allow those things to be organised easily. A swimming proposal to go to the nearest community (that has a pool, I am so jealous) was put forward and he replied with a condescending, patronising note asking questions that were already answered in the proposal! It made it seem like the extra work put in was worthless. Thankfully, the swimming is now going ahead anyway, because we

Oh, this sucks! *proceeds to kick Mr 40 Years in the shins*
I hope you get a better Acting Principal next year. Those kids deserve good teachers like you and people who work to make the school a better place, where everybody is encouraged to learn and improve their skills, not arseholes like him who destroy what good has been done by the others.
*hugs you tight* You're doing a tough job, and right now you're getting no support. It isn't any wonder that it gets you down like this, and I really, really hope that it gets better soon.
When does your new academic year go from? Is that when Mr 40 Years goes away and you (hopefully) get somebody competent, caring, organised and intelligent, who can lead, encourage, support, etc., and help boost everybody's morale?
Not too long - and you have Christmas in the middle of it...
You're not in an enviable position, but what you're doing matters, and even though it's hard and it's impossible to do your best when you're being thwarted by the person who's supposed to be supporting you, and even though I know it won't feel like it, you are making a difference. Even if it doesn't feel like it a lot of the time, even though it's baby steps, and quite often feels like for every 1 you take forwards, there are 2 backwards... You're doing a great job. You are making a difference. You care.
