wow, very dark but amazing. I really feel sorry for real!Gene here and I love that he wasn't able to go through with having Sam locked away in some asylum.

If I read this correctly, in this story, he is responsible for Vic's death and so he thinks he will cause the death of everyone he loves.

Yes. I never explicitly state it, but Sam shoots Vic protecting Gene, which is kind of why the whole thing pans out the way it does. Sam feels guilty about it, and in some ways like he deserves some kind of reward from Gene --- at the very least, love and affection. Hence, the dreamworld.

The saddest thing for me is I can't decide whether or not the "real" Gene would have had the courage to love Sam as much as he needed him to if Sam had had the strength to let Gene know just how lost he was.

Wow. I just read it and then read it again. My favorite part of this whole thing is that kiss that ends up haunting the real Gene and the way he reacts to it, as if it is normal to have Sam crawl onto his lap like that, and how he doesn't bring it up to Sam and acts as if it is everyday behavior. Your parellel world colliding in Sam's head with the real world, him not being sure sometimes which one he is in was just so bright, so gorgeous. Excellent stuff.
