That was so vivid and so absorbing that when it ended I had to blink and shake myself. That was clever and heartbreaking and gorgeous. In summary: one of your best yet. I'm about out olf superlatives, but you get my drift. I loved it. Thank you!

If I read this correctly, in this story, he is responsible for Vic's death and so he thinks he will cause the death of everyone he loves.
Yes. I never explicitly state it, but Sam shoots Vic protecting Gene, which is kind of why the whole thing pans out the way it does. Sam feels guilty about it, and in some ways like he deserves some kind of reward from Gene --- at the very least, love and affection. Hence, the dreamworld.
The saddest thing for me is I can't decide whether or not the "real" Gene would have had the courage to love Sam as much as he needed him to if Sam had had the strength to let Gene know just how lost he was.
