can fight the sleep but not the dream )
I'm not being florid or overly effusive when I say that is the single best piece of Life on Mars storytelling I've ever read. I'm at work and I was only going to give this a brief glance when I saw how many words it was and then save the rest for after I got home. Needless to say that didn't happen.
The way you show Sam slowly losing the small grip he had on his sanity and running away to a world where he feels needed and loved only to ultimately lose that as well is heartbreaking. Sam seems to have an overwhelming need to punish himself so even his perfect refuge with his perfect Gene can't shelter him forever. If I read this correctly, in this story, he is responsible for Vic's death and so he thinks he will cause the death of everyone he loves.
The saddest thing for me is I can't decide whether or not the "real" Gene would have had the courage to love Sam as much as he needed him to if Sam had had the strength to let Gene know just how lost he was.
Sorry for the rambling comment but I still can't think clearly after reading this. It is brilliant and you are brilliant. If you ever need to be reminded of that, just take this story out and read it again. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Yes. I never explicitly state it, but Sam shoots Vic protecting Gene, which is kind of why the whole thing pans out the way it does. Sam feels guilty about it, and in some ways like he deserves some kind of reward from Gene --- at the very least, love and affection. Hence, the dreamworld.

Good question. I'm not sure either.
Thank you for this comment, you've made my week.
