Desperately need help with the Good Omens Library

Jun 27, 2012 13:18

Here's the story:
When the Good Omens Library was first started, the domain name was registered through a "proxy". Then I took over, but I can't access the proxy without codes that I don't have, and which the original owner doesn't have either. Which means I cannot unlock the site and move it elsewhere. So I'm stuck paying a host site that I really ( Read more... )

Have you looked into puting it on An Archive of Our Own? They are set up to take archieves that the owners can no lolnger maintain. The Sentinel archive, 852 Prospect, just move there recently.

I think we might be thinking of the same site. AO3 and Open Doors are connected, so the archive probably went there.

Yes, I'm going to say that if you don't get any takers (and eFiction is totally beyond me, I'm sorry!), I'd definitely get in contact with Open Doors or Fanlore. If OD can't help you out, Fanlore is also pretty good at helping to rescue endangered works as well.

:/ I'm so sorry that this is happening! I hope someone can help, that is such a vital archive.

I hope it doesn't come to that. Especially since they TOO would be stuck with that same host site, unable to move without setting up shop from scratch.

*sigh* Man, I really do want to keep the Library going and to be involved, but I cannot sort the technical stuff out at all.

If you do decide to go with keeping eFiction, rather than migrating to A03 or similar, then I'd be willing to figure it out - I've written similar stuff in the past, so it shouldn't take too long.

Only downside is I'm about to go on holiday, so I won't be able to work on it extensively until mid/late July, which is cutting timing really close. If no one else offers, I'm all for it, though.

(ETA: I tried getting a version up and running on my test server, and it's a combination of really easy and completely impossible - I think it's an old software/new software fight. Basically, I'll have no trouble getting it running on some servers, but can't get anywhere on mine without changing the eFiction software itself, which I don't like to do.)

Easy vs. impossible is kind of my problem too. Others use it all over the web and it does seem to be mostly self-operational once it's up and running. But I have genuine trouble with long written directions that don't include illustrations, which is why I've never managed to handle moving on my own.

If no one else jumps into the fray before mid-July, you're definitely top of the list. And thank you.
