It was a day or so later. The young women were back with their families, or to where they felt safest. The nine attackers were in the custody of the local Queen. They were back on the road again, distributing medical supplies.
Denys had been buried in the town's graveyard.
Dinah didn't feel like talking, exactly. But she really needed to hear the voice of someone who hadn't been there.

"Oh. Right." Dinah nodded, leaning against a tree, back to the trunk. "You did. Thanks." She closed her eyes. "How are things there? Tell me something funny?"

"Well, I don't know about funny, per se, but I apparently managed to pick the perfect day to spend out of town looking at schools. Apparently, there was an unfortunate confluence of random island events, last Saturday. I don't know the details, but the kitchen staff spent all of Sunday muttering about monsters and the hearing impaired."
Which would be why he didn't listen to the radio to find out the details. He was pretty sure he was just fine knowing he'd picked the right day to be in College Park.

"Heh." She smiled a little, at least? "I'm glad I missed that one too. It'd have to make things much more difficult to fight." Dinah wrapped her arms around her stomach, listening to his voice. "What did you guys have for dinner? We're having a lot of potatoes, lately." A pang: we was minus one person now.

Hmmm. Something was definitely up. But she seemed to just want to do small talk, and Priestly was nothing if not willing to give a woman what she wanted.
"Dunno what Dean had," he said, shifting the phone to his other ear and stretching out on his bed, glass of whisky close at hand. "I did a quesedilla with grilled chicken, brie, granny smith apples, and some mango salsa." It was pretty much the very soul of CalMex, yes. "Think I might try a south of the border type theme, this week."

"We were gonna bring our crew to your place," Dinah blurted. Small talk, small talk, small talk. Try to make it that. "We told them so. After--I can't remember after what. Maybe after we won?" She swallowed. "Could still be a while. But that sounds-- that sounds awesome."
Re: Sometime after Arundal...blondecanaryAugust 21 2013, 05:12:41 UTC
"Seven," Dinah said automatically, then flinched. "I mean.. six. Wait. Maybe seven, the new girl..." She ran out of words, and rolled her eyes at herself. So much for small talk.
Re: Sometime after Arundal...blondecanaryAugust 21 2013, 05:20:07 UTC
"That sounds good." Dinah's voice was flat, but she tried to put more energy into it. "Mark and Kirt, they try, and we've venison stew a lot. I'm pretty sick of it." She paused. "Which is a stupid thing to complain about. I mean. There are people a lot worse off, you know?" No her voice was not cracking shut up Priestly!
Re: Sometime after Arundal...blondecanaryAugust 21 2013, 05:27:14 UTC
"Yeah. Yeah. Which was why we promised--" She cleared her throat. "They're a really great bunch. You'd really like them. Mark and Kirt are brothers, and Samantha's a mom of teenagers, so sometimes she treats them and Ulrich like they're her kids..." She paused, and then just said, "Denys. Would flirt with her. And she'd, she'd just laugh." Her eyes filled, and she whispered, "Not so funny now. That he's gone."
"Priestly? ... Call me when you have time to talk, okay? ... Please. Thanks. .. bye."

He might've snagged some of Dean's whisky first. Just, you know, in case.
So have a ringing phone, Dinah.

"How many people we talking here? I can make sure we're stocked up on fresh apples."

Ignore the wetness on her face, okay?
"...might come along. Maybe."

She'd tell him if the missing -- dead? -- seventh was someone he knew. She wouldn't dance around that. Also, she'd possibly be crying a lot more.
"I'll plan for an even ten, how's that? Then you can invite any extras along, too."

"I'm sorry," Priestly said softly. And had absolutely no idea what to say after that.
