Many thanks to silvercat17 for many of these scans!

The Prettiness
Nolan’s Joker is so goddamn pretty. I don’t know how he does it, but he makes him look like a preternaturally gorgeous playboy. That bone structure! That chin! Those eyes! The nose! Everything, it all just adds up to one stunning example of a pretty, pretty man but still with the ( Read more... )

Nolan is a truly underappreciated artist. When scans of his 'Tec work show up, someone always comes along to badmouth it. Really, you're right on with his Joker, and additionally, his Riddler and Penguin (with the oddly compelling three stray hairs) were favorites of mine.

really? I really think he has a lovely style and is technically very good, but also has quite a low of emotional power in his artwork too. He's certainly better than some of the recent artists. I find some of his set-up and supporting characters a little flat and cold at times, but his Joker is truly sensational - he really lives on the page.

Yay, another artist spotlight! You covered everything that makes Nolan a good Joker artist--the physique, the expressiveness, the charisma, the dangerous appeal (I like "he exudes a seductive confidence;" that's a good way to put it) he gives to the character. I recently bought a nice copy of Devil's Advocate instead of a textbook (OOPS. But after reading the comic and starting the class, I'm still delighted with my choice). I like the way Nolan lays out a page too. It's active when it needs to be active, and quiet when the scene requires, but never dull or lifeless.

Ha, not that anything could be lifeless with Joker in the panel. He's a frame-stealer.

He's da best of da best of da best!

PS - Have you seen the new Joker action figure out in the bank heist outfit? The detail is beyond guh-worthy!

That last one is really perfect. And so I'll tip my hat to the inker, as well, because those shadows are amazing! So few villains are so gleeful when they're having at it--that's one of the reasons I like The Joker so much. And of course, there's the charisma, too. The whole deal where he COULD be a top-notch person on account of all his brilliance--but how it just didn't turn out that way. And instead of a pity story, it's something to marvel at.

And anyways, anyways, these are very good. I think the anorexic Joker is a bit too much, as well. He needs to look like someone you don't want to mess with--not someone who you could break like a twig. And so these are just great. And ::hee:: for fashon statement Joker!
