My thanks to the brilliant New Orleans blogger known as Maitri, for opening my eyes to the extent of the devastation in LaFourche and Terrebonne Parishes in the wake of Hurricane Gustav. And also for opening my eyes to the complete lack of help the proud citizens of these parishes have received so far from FEMA, Red Cross, et al. They are not ( Read more... )

I don't think Houma has a high enough percentage of black people to qualify for oodles of Federal assistance. I feel bad for those people out here that are still without power, much less the few who's homes were ravished. They'll overcome, most likely. I went 6 days without power and very few means by which to attain food, and let me tell you it was no picnic.. I consider myself lucky to have family and friends who could help.

What did New Orleans people do when their homes were flooded? Seeked help. What did people in the heartland do when the mississippi flooded their entire towns? They worked to save what they could and tried to make the best of it. Obviously, a cultural divide.

Actually, both scenarios are true in both New Orleans and in the midwest, but the press covered it differently for various reasons (whatever works for ratings usually), and also the flood scenarios were much different as well ( ... )
