My thanks to the brilliant New Orleans blogger known as Maitri, for opening my eyes to the extent of the devastation in LaFourche and Terrebonne Parishes in the wake of Hurricane Gustav. And also for opening my eyes to the complete lack of help the proud citizens of these parishes have received so far from FEMA, Red Cross, et al. They are not waiting for help, they do not have their hands out, they ask for and expect nothing from anyone - they are doing for themselves, just like they always have. But that doesn’t mean people can’t reach out to lend a hand anyway. I’m sure they would be pleasantly surprised by any attention they might receive.

Maitri recently visited these parishes and met with members of the United Houma Nation to survey the extent of the damage. Please read her moving account here:
