Minor Update

Slight update - the Van's engine is dead. They are looking in to the price for a certified used engine for us. Estimate unavailable until they can find someone with the correct parts, but the ballpark for a van engine replacement calls for three to four thousand dollars. ouch.

Someone in filkertom's LJ suggested that you rent a U-Haul or van of some sort (using your AAA discount, of course) to get you and your stuff back home. I'd also suggest that you junk or donate the van (or use it as trade-in, if it's not as badly damaged as you've been told; there is a possibility that the mechanic is ripping you off, especially because you're from out of town), and buy a new used one - you could probably get one for the $4K you expect to pay for just the engine - either instead of, or in addition to, renting wheels to get home.

And, yes, all of this is dependent on how much money winds up in the hat... I wish I could have contributed more.

Well, we haven't heard back from the shop yet, as they need to find an engine before they can give us anything other than a ballpark. She's a pretty common make and model, so we're hoping that won't be overly hard

I've gotten temporarily stranded a couple of times on cross-country drives, and even with plenty of slack on the credit card (more than ten years ago!), it's still not fun. I hope you guys are okay.
