Fic: Firefly Songs

Apr 22, 2008 15:20

Meme time again! This was fun, if challenging. I like these kinds of memes, that include random Library songs, even more now that I have a Library to use. Pilfered from varcinie.

1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it’s over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.

Well, first I was going to go with Kaylee, but then "Breaking the Girl" came on and that's just River all over, so I went for the whole Serenity crew, plus a special guest in 5, which also has a spoiler for the episode Trash.

Oh, and I pretty much totally ignored the whole time limit, no editing rules. What can I say? I'm not posting something that isn't at least halfway decent on my journal. And I need longer than approximately three minutes to write something halfway decent.

1. “If You Want Me” Marketa Irglóva and Glen Hansard

It makes sense. It’s sensible. She knows this and yet the hurt goes deeper still. It’s all the things she hates in this ‘verse (yes, she does hate things), wrapped up and thrown in her face. She tries to smile for the rest of the crew, because they look so scared when she doesn’t. Do they even realize that she can’t find anything to smile about anymore? Not since Simon and River left. It’s sensible. It’s horrible.

2. “Breaking the Girl” Red Hot Chili Peppers

He would be lying if he said he never felt a... kinship with the girl from the first. Chewed up and spat out by the Alliance’s evil- yes, he knew the feeling well. But that wasn’t a good enough reason. None of them were. Comfort. Family. Lust. Nothing worked, and he should have recognized that. But since when did he make the right decisions?

“River...”

She makes no sense anymore. Really, none. Random words flutter out of her mouth as her eyes dart around as if she’s never seen the inside of Serenity before.

“River, we’re gonna find Simon soon. He’ll help you. He’ll fix this.”

“Broken. Broken. Broken.” She makes sense sometimes.

3. “Five O’Clock World” The Vogues

“Good work, Cobb, good work,” the foreman says, clapping a hand on Jayne’s shoulder and raising a cloud of dirt.

Jayne grunts. Squints into the sun. His eyes hurt, still adjusting after thirteen hours in the mines. He aches, seems like his whole body’s just one sore muscle, but he knows the quick strides are worth it if it shaves a few minutes off his trip home.

The door opens, and Jayne puts his best grin on. His wife returns it, picking up and waving the chubby arm of the baby on her hip, who seems more interested in grabbing at her long dark locks. “Groundhog Daddy’s done his burrowing for the day, Junior. Come home to the light and air and us.”

Jayne’s eyes fly open as he bolts upright in his bunk with a cry. His hand gropes past the curtain to fall on Vera’s smooth, solid metal.

4. “Mr. Brightside” The Killers

Nothing about Inara makes much sense to Mal. How can something that seems so precious, so unattainable, in fact be free for the taking? Well, not free. No, sure as hell not free. It makes him sick to think of her, what she is. Just an image, a toy for them to play with. He knows there’s so much more. But they’d never see it. She would never let them see it. He sees it, and that makes him special, different. But he’ll never see what she lets them see.

5. “Ticket to Ride” The Beatles

Durran thinks a lot about Yolanda, in the first few weeks after her disappearance. Thinks about every moment, every glance. He knows what the rest of the staff think. More and more, the evidence congeals into a bitter mass he can’t ignore. He didn’t get where he is by being a coward or a fool. He retreats into the more private chambers of his complex to mourn, but makes arrangements with the police, in case of Yolanda’s return.

6. “Love You Madly” Cake

Zoë has thought long and hard about this. Given it more consideration than she’s given a lot of things. Because she knows- this could be it. Something she’d almost forgotten about, a slice of normal she’d given up for lost. But it could go wrong, so very wrong, and she won’t allow it. Because this could be it.

“But you’re saying... you will have dinner with me?” Wash’s face is an adorable combination of fear, confusion, and hope.

Wait, adorable...? Yes, adorable. “Sounds like a good place to start.”

7. “Low” Coldplay

At first, Kaylee could believe it was just social awkwardness. It didn’t make a lick of sense, Simon being as shuai as he was, but there was just something missing. An extra step he wasn’t taking. Kaylee was more than willing to take it for him, but, in a puzzling maneuver, he would move away again. And yet she could see it in his eyes, how much he wanted happiness, love, her. It wasn’t out of reach, no matter how crazy their lives were. But he couldn’t seem to accept that, and it wasn’t really cute anymore, this awkward waltz of theirs.

8. “Everyday” Buddy Holly

“So, you think I should ask her?”

Jayne burst into laughter, “She’ll snap you in half, little man.”

“I’m going to ask Zoë to marry me, what do you think?”

Kaylee bit her lip and glanced away, “Um, well... You can sure try.” She gave him a tiny, encouraging, utterly fake smile.

“Mal, I’m asking Zoë to be my wife.”

Mal just stared until Wash backed out of the room.

“Zoë? Um, I love you. Will you marry me?”

“Yes.”

9. “1979” Smashing Pumpkins

Derrial didn’t want to go anywhere. Not like his friends. Big plans put them to sleep every night. Dreams, hopes- everything so grand. Derrial never understood the rush. Right now, for instance, would be a wonderful moment to live in forever. Sitting in the grass on top of a hill, watching the sunlight die and the streetlights wake. He counted roof-tops, thought about all the stories beneath them.

“Operative, it’s time to go.”

Derrial realized the officer had called him a few times. He still hadn’t gotten used to the loss of his name. They told him he would, over time.

10. “Walkin’ After Midnight” Patsy Cline

She knows it isn’t true, but River always feels Serenity is bigger on the inside than on the outside. It has to be, to contain all the people- Mal and his lost batallion, Kaylee and Jayne and their families, Inara and her clients, Wash and his imaginary companions...

But River’s not looking for any of them when she traces Serenity’s corridors long after manufactured night arrives. She’s looking for that beautiful, brilliant girl she once knew. Everyone used to praise that girl. She had delighted in their astonishment when she would do something new and amazing. River had lost contact with her, but she would love to renew the friendship. They used to be so close...

Her heart jumps into her throat sometimes, when she thinks she hears light, un-shoed footsteps, somewhere else in Serenity. Maybe... Maybe she’s out there, looking for River.
