My fandom life and real life are hand in hand with one another. My hubbie knows I write slash and fic and everything and is okay with all of it, he's like 'whatever makes you happy'.
Most of my friends know and either don't care or are also into it. My parents and my sister know that I like slash but not that I write it.
My folks pretty much ignore it and my sister is a complete asshat about it - so, yeah, pretty much almost everyone I know knows what's up.
I can't believe that guy wanted you to try his contacts...weeeeeird.
Oh, I'm so jealous! I don't think my family or friends would have a problem with it, they'd just think I was even odder than they already think I am. They'd probably be of the opinion that I should write 'proper' fiction as well, but I get nowhere near the same amount of joy from it so I'll stick to my fanfic, thanks. :)
And yeah, things definitely took a turn for the weird from that moment on. 'Do you want to try my contacts?' 'Hmm, how can I best put this, stranger on the train? No. No I don't.'
Oh, I am positive my whole crowd of friends/family would be waaaay happier if I wrote 'proper' fiction. I would like to as well - I always wanted to be an author but I get sort of overwhelmed by my original ideas - in that way where I feel they all suck.
Fan fiction is easy and fun - it's something to do after I get off work, a nice way to unwind (for the most part - there are a few pieces I get all crazy-in-the-head/stress about).
Yeah, I'd love to be a professional author (I think we all would!) but having decent ideas of my own is such a rare thing for me. All of the prompts I make on the meme are usually just asking for PWP, haha, I'm actually really jealous of the people who come up with really imaginative prompts.
You're exactly right! I get a bit stressed with challenge fics sometimes (I had no idea how hard drabble writing was until the mp_ldws contest) but I love filling prompts and writing fic for other people as well as myself. And with fanfic there's the immediate gratification of an instant audience as well, which definitely helps!
This is why I am endlessly thankful neither of my siblings are into fandom, at all. The closest anyone in my family comes to fandom is my mother being part of the Dr Who spoilers community on Facebook. XD
Haha! I had such high hopes for my sister and fandom when she got really into Harry Potter, but she seems to be more into the actors/the films/the books than fandom itself, if you know what I mean. She has drawn fanart in the past and she's printed off quite a few icons and stuck them on her walls but she doesn't have an LJ or a DeviantArt or anything. On the one hand I'm relieved that she won't be stumbling upon the porn I write any time soon (fingers crossed) but on the other I'm a bit gutted that she's not part of a fandom community and we can't share lulzy in-jokes about internet culture. But then again, that's why I have you guys! <3
My mom reads my fic. Of course, she also took my first tied-up bondage photos (as opposed to the chained-up ones...) and critiques my photo sets, so *shrugs* Oddly I get more self-conscious about the fic.
What case was that paragraph in, do you recall?
I am very apt to get overly familiar with strangers, but trying out contacts? Were they special somehow? o_0 I'm not sure I'd do that even with friends, just because of germs&stuff...
That's so cool! I'd love to share something like that with my kids, if/when I have any.
You're in luck, my Kindle bookmarked the paragraph!
'Ah, Watson,' said Holmes, smiling, 'perhaps you would not be very gracious either, if, after all the trouble of wooing and wedding, you found yourself deprived in an instant of wife and of fortune. I think that we may judge Lord St. Simon very mercifully and thank our stars that we are never likely to find ourselves in the same position. Draw your chair up and hand me my violin, for the only problem we have still to solve is how to while away these bleak autumnal evenings.'
No, they were prescription contact lenses, made for his eyes! I'd just mentioned how I'd never tried contact lenses before and I was a bit afraid of them, haha. It was a bit bizarre, I'll have to admit.
My parents both rock pretty hard. I am the envy of most of my peers. ^_^ They're a little crazed, but but I adore them. I wanna be a lot like my folks when I have a kid, too.
Interesting, but I think I've heard worse.
That's...a bit weird. If he happened to be carrying a clean set, unused, I could sorta see it, but really, the contacts out of his eyes? Too much, dude!
This made me smile. Even if it is a bit embarrassing when it's to do with family bringing it up, it's always fun when fandom pops up in the real world :')

So, fan fiction + me = OTP!

Glad you got your computer fixed?

I don't know whether it is fixed! It ran fine for an hour and a half just now but then crashed, again, so I don't bloody know.
How's your paper going? Is your dad still there?
