"Nothing? That's unexpected." Truth and lie intertwined; the reality was, hiding secrets, hiding whatever drew him to this spot with such undeniable force remained the status quo for Itachi. Starting in those days years ago, Kakashi had to work his way subtlely beneath each mask, and only then, ever earned glimpses of what Itachi allowed him to see. So despite his own statement, the words were nothing of a surprise. "Yes." It was unexpected. Very unexpected. Shisui should have been there and yet he was not, and with the logical view on the situation and knowing Shisui was dead and had no place in this world, in any world, he knew why. Logically he knew he should feel gratitude for the time they'd stolen from deaths grasp, but the human part of him that still remained after all this time felt only the loss. And all the bitterness and blame and confusion of emotion with it that the shinobi part of him tried to quell and silence.

"It's what I don't see," he began, then stopped. Listened.

The corner of his mouth kicked up at the blunt way Kakashi stated his intentions. It wasn't a rejection when he replied, not exactly. "And what choice is it you're giving me."

The words Itachi began to utter stunned Kakashi into momentary silence. Could it really be so simple? He expected rejection from Itachi, a cloak of silence wrapped too tightly around his spirit to penetrate. Yet at the start, before Kakashi brought up Loki's mandates and consequences, he'd been given a glimpse inward, to the empty vision that had Itachi here ( ... )
