Hey, there. I'm here because I always come check out the pages of people who friend me as I'm always curious as to why. A quick glance or look at the icon page shows me if someone is a DW fan and not a Russian spambot. Anyway, I saw your question ( ... )

Yep, ditto. I always look at the LJ of someone who's friended me - reading a couple of entries and looking at the profile page usually gives me a clue as to why they friended me. Also, like Amber, I have an open-door policy too, and it's stated clearly in my profile. Unlike many LJ users, I rarely talk about personal stuff on my LJ, so whether or not I friend back is pretty much irrelevant; you'll get 99% of what I post on my LJ on your friends page, and 90% of that is fic.

I often do friend back, therefore, because there's so little stuff that I keep under lock, and if it's really sensitive I'll use a filter. I do use filters when reading my friends list, however, because I would simply never be able to manage it otherwise. I add people to that reading filter based on getting to know them (through them commenting on my LJ, or seeing them around and about in other friends' LJs, or getting linked back to posts on their LJ that I find interesting ( ... )

People who are sensitive about their privacy usually put a friends-only banner up on their journal, and you'll see that when you click their name. Most would just prefer you to leave a little comment saying who you are and why you'd like to friend them ( ... )

Friending's always been a puzzle for me as well, for the same reasons as what you state here. I think the best way to approach it is exactly what you're doing: send a private message saying hello and explaining to the person you'd like to friend why you'd like to friend them. Trust me, I just read your PM and it put a huge smile on my face. :) And btw, going to reply to your PM now. And friend you. *grins*
