Since some kind people have been reading their way through my story without having a clue about Carry Ons or what these people look like, a nice bit of pic spam for those who've followed me this far: ( Carry On Cowboy pic spam )
Oooh, there's so many! I'll have to read some recommendations and track a couple of these down. The descriptions remind me somewhat of the "Road Shows" that Bing Crosby and Bob Hope did many years back.
Glad you liked them. I really should have been doing something else!! Now, you see (although I do know who Bing Crosby and Bob Hope are), I don't know anything about their road shows. ;-)
They are very childish, full of bad jokes, innuendos, but also a lot of energy, enthusiasm, witty lines and overall unremitting daftness and cocking a snook at bureaucracy. And had the good fortune to snag a fantastic recurring cast. They'd never manage that now - they'd all be off pursuing separate careers!
Oh, sorry. Forgot I'd already talked too much about this. If it's any consolation, I did a documentary on this for A-Level Media studies, so I could have said much more... ;-)
Well, there's a treasure to *you* in exchange then! By all means at least find a copy of "Road to Morocco" somewhere (the best in that series of films, imho), top notch black-n-white fun. Bing Crosby was best known as a singer and Bob Hope as a comedian, so there's a little music thrown in and the threesome that were the core of this set (Dorothy Lamour, a sultry actress of the time is the other 'always there') are just a delight. Plenty of the ingredients you name above plus lots of ad-lib seat-of-the-pant dialogue from two brilliant ad-libbers. :-D
Road to Hong-Kong also has moments that stick with you forever, though it's even more random than most and feels like they didn't even *try* to have a plot anymore.
