Saturday night I took
stonebender on a mystery date. He only knew we were driving somewhere and doing something. Since he was hungry, he hoped it included food. We'd played Q&A for about a week, he trying his best to figure it out and I trying my best to be truthful but in an muddling way. Only when we were on our way did I tell him we were going to Antioch. Now he was really confused because this is a fairly small town N.E. of us. He didn't know where we were going until we drove by the El Campanile Theater and he saw the marque announcing Paula Poundstone.
Laughter later, first we needed food. We went to the Riverview Lounge for dinner. It's been around for 60 years and I don't think the decore has changed since it opened. It is right on the San Joaquin River. I had a crab souffle and he had a steak sandwich. I was the win in the food choice, his steak was tough and they used Worcestershire sauce on it.
Paula was great, she really works the audience for much of her show. She obviously had some routine pieces, but I really think a lot of her stuff was off the cuff. And the theater was a restored 80 year old vaudeville theater. The Three Stoges had played there and Paula, while laying down on the stage, wondered if any of the Stodges had layed on this same floor. She was in awe, she loves the Stodges and thought Moe was the cutest.
I brought my camera and I had a good time taking some photos outside of the restaurant. Here's a picture of
stonebender inside the restaurant, note the woodpanelling and the plastic stained glass art. Good Times, Good Times
