Elizabeth's corset is right up there with Singapore when it comes to historical obscurities in the movies.

Since the films are supposed to take place in an era when pirating was still a prevalent way to earn income, (though already beginning to take the form of privateering, which is basically just a fancier way to say 'pirate', but I digress...)

The corset we see her being laced into is a garment designed for tightlacing, i.e. to accentuate the proportions of shoulders-waistline-hips, more commonly known as the hourglass figure, which wasn't really around until the Victorian and Edwardian era.

What we should've been seeing Elizabeth in, would be a bodice with shoulder straps to have her stand up fashionably straight, and press and push up her bust to have the era's desired effect of her breasts' curves contrasting the rigidness of her overall appearance. Those things restricted breathing very little, or not at all.

So, yeah, that corset was definitely something ground-breakingly new :D ( ... )
